Common blocking software & how to manage

If you’re on your own device and want to change or turn off filtering, here are typical tools and where to look. Admin or parent may be required for some.

  • Windows Family Safety / Microsoft Family
Built-in Windows content filtering and screen time.
Settings → Accounts → Family & other users → your account → Content restrictions. Or run ms-settings:family-group in the Run dialog. Turn off “Block inappropriate websites” or adjust allowed list. Requires parent/guardian account to change.
  • Router / DNS blocking
Network-level blocking (e.g. OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, or router parental controls).
Use a different DNS on this device: Settings → Network → change DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). Or enable DNS-over-HTTPS in your browser. Router changes require router admin access.
  • Corporate / school proxy or firewall
Work or school network that filters traffic.
You usually can’t disable this yourself. Use your own network (mobile hotspot, home Wi‑Fi) or request access from IT. VPN or proxy may be against policy—check before using.
  • Browser extensions (BlockSite, StayFocusd, etc.)
Extensions that block sites or limit time.
Chrome: go to chrome://extensions, find the extension, toggle off or remove. Edge: edge://extensions. Firefox: Menu → Add-ons and themes → Extensions. Disable or uninstall the blocker.
  • Covenant Eyes / accountability software
Filtering and reporting software often used for accountability.
Uninstall from Settings → Apps (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac). Usually requires installer password or admin. Account holder may need to disable from the service’s website.
  • macOS Screen Time & Content & Privacy
Apple’s built-in limits and content restrictions.
System Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy (or Restrictions). Change “Web Content” or “Limit Adult Websites.” May require Screen Time passcode or parent account.
  • Managed browser or kiosk mode
Browser locked down by school or organization.
Use a different browser (if allowed) or your own device on a different network. Kiosk mode is usually controlled by admin only.
